Over years Jakarta has significantly increased in population. In 2010 Jakarta had a population of 9.58 million. In 2014 Jakarta had increased drastically to 10.2 million. Jakarta's population grew so much that it is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
From 2010 to today, Jakarta has being growing rapidly. Since 1970 Jakarta has actually doubled to twice its size over time.
Jakarta’s initial large population has encouraged even more people to move there.
Jakarta’s population density is ranked 17th in the whole world. Jakarta’s density is 10,500 people per square kilometre. That’s ten times the population density of Melbourne, Australia.
Because of the population density problems have been occurring in Jakarta. Jakarta is now becoming starved of its resources by it’s own population. Originally Jakarta was designed to hold approximately 800,000. Except now it holds 12 million. It has been estimated that by 2020 the population is going to be 35 million. This is going to worsen problems for residents, including poor sanitation, lack of housing and transport issues.
